Dandelion Lane Farm talks about why they dig what they do!
• When did you start farming? What brought you into farming?
Dandelion Lane Farm started in 2012 after Dawn Lichtenwalner attended Market Gardener Training at YNDC.
• What is your fondest memory/favorite time of year/favorite task about farming?
We really enjoy raising our poultry (ducks, chicken, turkey). The provide hours of simple, honest entertainment and are delicious to eat!
• Has it been viewed as more of a business for you, or a lifestyle choice? Some combination of the both?
Dandelion Lane Farm is both a business and lifestyle choice. After starting a garden some seven years ago, we made the deliberate choice to remove packaged items from our life. Rarely will you find us with anything pre-packaged; we prefer to make almost everything from scratch, and can/freeze a large quantity of produce during the summer. Now that we’re raising our own poultry, we stopped purchasing from various grocery stores. We’re raising our own pork this year, and will purchase beef only from a local, well respected farm.
• How do you see your role in the community?
Our role is to provide customers an education on why buying local is the best choice—and healthiest choice! In the process, we encourage our customers to play with their food, create and try new recipes, and think outside the box when it comes to eating.
